Copacabana
Copacabana is a town and municipality in Bolivia, and the capital of the province of Manco Kapac in the department of La Paz. It lies on the shores of Lake Titicaca at an altitude of approximately 3,841 metres above sea level, making it one of the country’s main tourist destinations and centres of pilgrimage.
Here is a detailed description of its key features:
Meaning and History Etymology
- The name comes from the Aymara phrase Qupa qhawa-na, which means "lookout point of the idol" or "view of the lake."
- Origin: It was originally inhabited by the Aymara people, then conquered by the Incas (who considered it a sacred site near the sunrise), and finally by the Spanish.
Religious and Cultural Attractions
- Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana: An imposing white building in Moorish and Renaissance styles that houses the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of Bolivia. It's famous for the "Blessing of Vehicles," where owners decorate their cars with flowers to be blessed.
- Calvary Hill: A pilgrimage site where visitors climb following the Stations of the Cross. It offers the most famous panoramic view of the city and the best sunsets over the lake.
Nature and Archaeological Tourism
Copacabana is the main starting point for exploring the sacred islands:
- Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun): Considered the birthplace of the Inca civilization. It is home to sites such as the "Sacred Rock," the Pilkokaina Palace, and the Inca Staircase.
- Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon): Known for the Temple of the Virgins of the Sun (Iñak Uyu).
- Gorge of the Inca (Pachataka): An ancient pre-Hispanic astronomical observatory located on Kesanani Hill.
Gastronomy
- Gastronomy: The emblematic dish is fresh trout from Lake Titicaca, served in various ways at the waterfront stalls and local restaurants.
